City Grey Water Utilization

Turning wastewater into a circular resource

A multidisciplinary solutions framework to capture, treat, and redistribute 800 million litres of daily grey water, reducing freshwater dependency across Gujarat’s most water-stressed regions.

Gujarat has 6.39% of India’s land — but only 2.28% of its water

Geographic Imbalance

Of 185 rivers, only 8 are perennial — all in the south. 69% of surface water is concentrated in central and southern Gujarat, leaving the remaining three-quarters of the state severely under-resourced.

Water Stress

58.6% of Gujarat is water-stressed due
to arid, semi-arid, and saline conditions
— one of the highest proportions of any
Indian state.

The Daily Drain

Every day, 700–800 million liters (MLD) of city grey water flows through Ahmedabad’s drainage system — largely untreated and untapped as a resource.

Treated wastewater can replace freshwater — at scale

The Government of Gujarat has introduced a forward-looking policy for treated wastewater (TWW) reuse: minimum 80% sewage coverage and collection across all municipal towns, 100% treatment of collected sewage, and treated wastewater replacing at least 25% of total freshwater consumption. This creates a direct opportunity to build a circular water economy where every litre treated becomes a usable resource.

Direction of change

By developing knowledge-driven and research-driven solutions for sustainable TWW implementation, GSF aims to reduce freshwater dependency, protect natural water bodies from pollution and help create a water-secure Gujarat.
