Babul Vad — a mining crater restored to living forest

The Babul Vad site is a real-world demonstration of how severely degraded land can be restored into a thriving ecological asset using circular regenerative principles. This initiative is envisioned as a replicable regional and national framework, transforming industrial and ecological liabilities into resilient, living environmental assets.

The Site

2.5 hectares (25,000 sq m). Former mining crater excavated 6 m below ground. Highly compacted parent clay with negligible organic content.

The Intervention

Biochar-based carbon scaffolding + stone crusher mineral rock dust + micro-milled agricultural seed catalysts + organic microbial activation systems.

The Result

1,000+ banyan trees planted in a structured ecological grid. At 18–20 months: biological stabilisation achieved, canopy development accelerating.

Aquifer Recharge

Deep banyan root systems fracture compacted mining layers, creating underground macro-pores that improve monsoon rain infiltration and groundwater recharge.

Urban Wastewater Link

Treated urban greywater is used during dry seasons — reducing freshwater dependency while recycling urban nutrient streams into the ecosystem.

Community Commons

At maturity: carbon sequestration, ambient cooling, shaded biological zones, biodiversity improvement, and a long term public ecological commons for
community engagement.
